As the temperatures begin to drop, your deck isn’t a place where you will be spending a lot of time. As snow and ice begin to form, winter weather can be hard on wooden decks. To ensure that you can grill and enjoy the sunshine when spring arrives, learn how to winterize your deck.

3 Tips for Preparing Your Deck for Winter

1. Check for Existing Damage

Before winter arrives, carefully evaluate your deck to check for damage, such as rotting wood, fractures, damaged screws, or signs of warping. If you spot issues, consult with a deck contractor to have these resolved as soon as possible. In some instances, portions of your deck may need to be replaced to protect the entire structure from winter weather.

2. Clean the Area

3. Apply A Water Repellant or Protective Varnish

Protect your deck from water by applying either a water repellent, such as a hydrophobic spray, or a protective varnish. Both substances help water to bead away from the surface, preventing water damage. Before applying varnish, make sure to remove any loose paint chips and wood splinters to ensure a smooth, even coat that will create a hard, impenetrable surface.
