Most species of trees are hardy and designed to withstand the elements. Yet, that doesn't mean they're not susceptible to damage, especially during the radical temperature and weather changes of winter. Fortunately, a few precautionary steps reinforce their natural defenses to ensure they're still thriving when spring arrives. Follow this three-step tree maintenance checklist to protect your plants this winter.

Insulate

A tree relies on its root system to access water underground. However, when the ground freezes, the moisture freezes with it, and the mobility of the roots becomes limited, preventing them from accessing hydration further down. To prevent winter drought, add about two inches of fresh mulch around the plant. This step helps trap heat at the surface.

When temperatures rise and drop, the process of freezing, thawing, and refreezing can cause sunscald — a cracking of the trunk. Younger plants are most susceptible to the problem, but it can impact trees of any age. Luckily, avoiding the issue is as simple as covering the base in paper tree wrap.

Prune

The lack of foliage in winter provides a full view of the plant, making it the ideal time for tree pruning. Removing dead, damaged, or weakened limbs ensures that the healthy parts of the tree aren't competing for nutrients. The routine tree maintenance also provides an excellent time to identify signs of disease or fungal growth.

Protect

Rodents, rabbits, and deer pose a bigger risk to trees during winter than most pests as insects typically become inactive during cooler temperatures. With a lack of foliage in the area, these mammals turn to the tree for nutrition, often gnawing or stripping away bark. This process weakens the plant and makes it more susceptible to tree diseases. To reduce the risk, add plastic tree guards or caging around the base to keep the pests out.
