If you’ve ever felt nauseated, dizzy, or sweaty while riding in a moving vehicle, you’ve experienced motion sickness. The common, though temporary, condition is the same as seasickness and can also happen in cars. Here’s what you need to know about what causes motion sickness and how to alleviate symptoms before scheduling your next car service.

Why Does Motion Sickness Occur?

Conflicting sensory messages cause motion sickness. When the eyes see something that doesn’t match up with what the ears, skin pressure sensors, and muscle and joint sensory receptors detect, jumbled messages get sent to the central nervous system. For example, if you’re riding in a bumpy bus, your body will feel you moving up and down while your eyes see what’s straight ahead. Those mixed sensations then cause nausea, among other symptoms.

Poor air circulation can exacerbate these symptoms, as can reading. In the early stages, symptoms include queasiness, sweating, and dizziness. In more severe cases, these can progress to include vomiting, drooling, and shortness of breath.

How Can You Relieve Motion Sickness While Riding in a Car?

car serviceIf you are prone to motion sickness and are concerned about feeling unwell when using a car service, abstain from alcohol the night before your ride. Alcohol can increase stomach unrest in the morning. Drink plenty of water instead, and snack on bland foods, such as plain crackers, to avoid upsetting your stomach. Avoid spicy, acidic, and greasy foods before your trip, as these can also contribute to motion sickness.

Keep the air flowing during your ride by cracking windows and focusing on the horizon in front of you to preserve your sense of balance. If you’re sitting in a position where you can’t see the horizon, close your eyes to prevent disruptions between what you see and what your body feels. Chewing on ginger root or tablets during your trip can provide relief as well.

If you still feel sick, lie down. Schedule an appointment with your doctor at your earliest convenience to discuss motion sickness medications and other remedies.
