Traditional beers and liquors are high in barley and grain enzymes that can make them difficult to enjoy for those that have celiac disease or a gluten allergy. If you’re have a gluten-free diet, here are some drinks to try the next time you go out to your local bar with the gang.

5 Gluten-Free Drinks to Try at the Bar

1. Hard Cider

If you’re not a fan of beer, but still want to enjoy the bar with your friends or family, then order a hard cider. Some brands add barley for flavor or the extra enzymes, so make sure you’re aware of the ingredients. Try an Ace Pear Cider, Angry Orchard, or MackJac hard cider if you’re looking for a crisp drink that’s light on the stomach.

2. A Jack Rose

Making your own fruit syrup is the best way to ensure that what you’re drinking is gluten-free. Try mixing a juice made from pomegranates, sugar, water, and dried hibiscus with applejack and a distilled spirit for a tasty and fruity drink. Include a dash of lime if you want to add a little tart to your cocktail.

3. Rum Cocktails

The next time you order from the bar, ask for a rum and coke made with Captain Morgan or Myer’s rum. If you’re looking for a tropical fix, try pineapple juice and Malibu Rum.

4. Gluten-Free Beer

Going out with your friends for drinks can be tough if you can’t drink with them. However, there’s a long list of gluten-free beers to try. Next time you order, ask for a Brewdog Vagabond Pale Ale, Nickel Brook Gluten Free beer, or something from Two Bays Brewing Co.

5. Gin

If gin is your go-to bar drink, but you’re afraid of the effects it’ll have on your stomach, try a cocktail with Cold River Gin and seltzer or tonic with a splash of lime for the perfect gin cocktail. You’ll enjoy how refreshing this gluten-free mixture is and you won’t have to worry about feeling sick afterwards.
