Strep throat is a common bacterial infection resulting in pain and inflammation in the throat. Caused by the Streptococcus bacteria group, strep throat can affect children, teens, and adults, but it is most common in children between the ages of five and 15. Strep throat can be diagnosed in a doctor’s office, walk-in clinic, or urgent care facility

Symptoms

The onset of strep throat can bring symptoms such as throat discomfort, difficulty and painful swallowing, enlarged and red tonsils, and white patches along the throat. Some individuals may have pus in the throat. Otherwise, you might experience a high-grade fever, rashes on various parts of the body, body aches, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and, in some instances, diarrhea.

Causes

The Streptococcus bacteria group is extremely contagious, spreading rapidly through airborne droplets when a person sneezes, coughs, or even speaks. The bacteria can also spread once an infected person shares food or beverages with another person. A door knob or hard surface can also transmit the illness.

Treatment

urgent careIf you suspect strep throat, see a doctor at an urgent care facility to help shorten the life span of the illness. The most popular form of treatment is oral antibiotics such as amoxicillin and Penicillin, though some people can be allergic to one or both of them. In this case, your health care practitioner will offer alternative prescriptions. Usually, you or your child must take the medicine for ten days. Make sure to follow the regimen fully, even if symptoms seem to be improving, as the bacteria can linger.
