If you've recently purchased a home, knowing the age of the roof is essential to providing proper care and upkeep. Roofs don’t last forever, and its age will tell you if it needs more frequent maintenance or if it needs to be replaced entirely. If you're unsure of the exact age of your roof, try any of the three methods below.

How to Find Out the Age of a Roof

1. Consult the Prior Owners

If your roof was replaced before you moved in, your home's previous owners will be able to tell you when the replacement took place. Even if they didn't have the roof replaced, you'll know that the roofing has been in place for at least the length of their residence in your home.

If you recently purchased your home and have the previous owner's contact information, reach out to them. If you aren't sure how to contact them, contact your realtor and see if they have a way of connecting with the last owner.

2. Schedule an Inspection

roofingThere are two ways to get a professional roof inspection. The easier and more affordable method is to contact a roofing company. They’re typically able to assess the maturity of the roof by looking for signs of age and pinpointing an approximate installation date. Your other option is to schedule a home inspector to come and evaluate the roof. This could be the same person you hired to do the inspection prior to the closing of the home sale.

3. Call Local Roofing Companies

If the above methods aren’t as successful as you hoped, consider calling local roofing companies. This can require some time and investigative work, especially if you live in a more urban area with a lot of roofers. Explain to each one the predicament you're in, and see if they have a record of replacing the roof of your home at any time in the past. Like any business, roofers keep receipts for work performed, so they may be able to tell you if they worked with the home's prior owners on any roofing issues.
