If you’re in the early stages of a kitchen remodeling project, one of the most significant decisions you need to make concerns the room’s layout. There are several different configurations to keep in mind. One may be more appropriate than another depending on your available space. Below is what you should know when developing your new kitchen.

5 Kitchen Layouts to Consider

1. Galley

The galley kitchen lays everything out in a space that resembles a corridor. There is limited room to move here, and typically it can accommodate no more than a single cook at a time. The traditional layout includes a microwave and refrigerator facing the sink and dishwasher, which contributes to an efficient work zone in a compact space.

2. Horseshoe

kitchen remodelingHorseshoes, or U-shaped kitchens, are practical because they seamlessly connect the appliances, countertops, and the storage systems. The result is a prized area called the work triangle, or the space that allows one or more cooks to easily move from the refrigerator to the sink to the cooktop while preparing dishes.

3. L-Shape

An L-shaped kitchen is a modern design that is similar to a horseshoe, except that it lacks a wall. Instead, the work triangle forms on two continuous walls. In an ideal situation for meal preparation, one side features a refrigerator and a sink, while the other features a cooktop. This creates an efficient space that can accommodate more than a single cook, as well.

4. G-Shape

The G-shaped kitchen is like a horseshoe with some additional space. All other features replicate that of the U-shaped space, but your kitchen remodeling professional can add a peninsula or additional section of cabinetry. You can determine which you prefer based on your personal needs for more workspace or more storage.

5. Straight

A straight kitchen layout is situated against a single wall. In small homes, kitchen remodeling contractors often only have this option available to them. The triangle of the kitchen becomes a single line. It includes the refrigerator, sink, cooktop, and appliances, all in a row.
