Whether it’s the result of an accident or tooth decay, it can be alarming to have a tooth fall out. However, taking the right steps may allow a dentist to save the tooth. To help improve your chances, here’s what to do immediately after this emergency.

What to Do If Your Tooth Falls Out

1. Retrieve & Clean It

Look for the tooth right away. When you pick it up, avoid touching the root of it, as this is a delicate area that can get damaged easily. Handle the tooth by the crown instead.

Since it’s likely picked up dirt, rinse it carefully with water. Don’t use any soap or other products, which have chemicals that could cause further damage.

2. Keep It Moist

dentistOnce the tooth is clean, carefully reposition it in its socket with your fingers and close your mouth. Then, bite down on the tooth to keep it in place.

If you are unable to do this, put the tooth in a glass of milk. This will keep it moist, which will preserve it.

3. Go to the Dentist

Try to see a dentist within 30 minutes of losing your tooth. The sooner you arrive, the more likely it is that the dentist will be able to save your tooth through tooth splinting. During this procedure, the professional will attach dental crowns to the affected tooth and the surrounding ones. This will hold the loose tooth in place until the gums can grow around it and secure it.

However, if several hours have passed since you’ve lost your tooth, your dentist might not be able to perform this. In this case, you can replace it with a dental implant. Dental implants are artificial teeth that look and function like natural ones
