Dental crowns are caps that fit over a natural tooth after root canal therapy, a large filling, or prosthetics. Luckily, getting one is simpler than ever, thanks to the CEREC® process, which can be performed in a single appointment. Below is a helpful guide that covers what will happen during your session at the dentist’s office.

What to Expect When Getting a Dental Crown

1. Tooth Preparation

Depending on why you’re having this dental procedure done, the dentist may need to prep the tooth first. For example, if the tooth has been severely damaged, it may need a filling prior before receiving a crown. In other cases, the tooth may need to be filed down slightly to prepare it for the right fit. The dentist may perform initial X-rays and a visual examination to make the determinations for proper treatment.

2. Digital Imaging or Impressions

crownsFor the same-day crown process, the dentist will use digital imaging or impressions to take precise measurements of the tooth. Then, according to the CEREC process, they’ll use computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software to create a perfect 3-D rendering of the crown in the exact size and shape needed. The machine will then mill a ceramic crown that fits your tooth’s unique contours.

3. Crown Application

Finally, the dentist will place the crown over the tooth and bond it into place. In traditional methods, you might receive a temporary cover while the dental lab creates the final product. These temporary models are less durable than permanent solutions and therefore require caution while chewing, brushing, and flossing. Fortunately, permanent crowns can last up to 15 years with proper care.
