If you’ve recently been outfitted with braces, you’re taking a step towards straighter teeth and a more beautiful smile. Learning how to care for your new braces will help keep the wires and brackets from shifting, which can be painful and could make the process take longer.

Do:

Take Extra Care While Brushing & Water Flossing

Brush your teeth gently to prevent damage to the dental devices in your mouth. Use a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste for two minutes twice a day. We recommend that if you don’t already have a Sonicare toothbrush, that you get one. Floss twice a day using a water pick for orthodontic work. Diligent brushing and water flossing prevents food particles from getting stuck between braces and creating plaque.

Refine Your Diet

bracesAvoid consuming sticky foods or chewing gum since both can get stuck on your braces and pull at the brackets and wires. Sticky foods also linger in the mouth longer, promoting decay. Refrain from eating hard or crunchy foods that can bend wires and damage brackets. Sugary foods and beverages wear on the adhesive keeping the brackets in place and can cause them to dislodge.

Use a fork and knife to cut your food up instead of biting into it and possibly damaging the braces.

Don’t:

Forget To Take The Bands Out When You’re Eating

If your braces include bands to correct your jaw movement, remove the bands before every meal and snack. This keeps them from getting in the way of eating and possibly snapping and breaking. Broken bands also pose a safety issue as they could be a choking hazard if not removed before eating.

Play Contact Sports Without Facial Protection?

Invest in a protective mask if you play contact sports. Getting hit in the face while wearing braces can cause the metal to cut your lips, gums, and cheeks in addition to potentially causing shifts in the braces that require emergency dental visits. The impact can also chip your teeth.
