While having children is a very rewarding experience, caring for a newborn can be challenging and stressful. In addition to being responsible for a little one, it’s a major life transition that requires making modifications and sacrifices. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, below are a few techniques to help you boost your mood and stay positive — even when your little one gets cranky.

Tips for Staying Positive During Early Motherhood

1. Get Out of the House

A little fresh air and a change of scene can make a big difference in your day, as it can be easy to get lost in daily feedings and diaper changes. Try getting out of the house at least once a day when the weather permits. If you don’t have the time or child care coverage to go for a stroll alone, bring your baby along and run a few errands, such as grocery shopping, so you can create a productive and refreshing environment.

2. Don’t Be Afraid to Rely on Others

Life TransitionsLeaning on loved ones can help you get through any tough life transition. But as a new mom with a baby, it may feel like there is nothing you can ask for help with. This is not true — while a friend or family member may not be able to take over breastfeeding duty or calm your baby in the middle of the night, they can help you with tasks such as errand running and food preparation. Don’t be afraid to seek support from a therapist, a life coach, or a family member.

3. Make Time for Self-Care

It’s essential to practice self-care during any challenging life transition, including motherhood. It’s easy to lose your sense of self when you’re caring day and night for a newborn. Doing something you enjoy each day — even if it’s as simple as taking a hot bath or hitting a half-hour yoga class — will help you stay positive by connecting you to yourself.
