Nail trimming is an important part of your dog’s health. When their nails overgrow, it can create constant discomfort and even lead to injuries, which is why you need to handle the job regularly. However, keeping them manicured requires proper preparation and care. Below, learn veterinarian-approved tools and techniques so you can count on a positive outcome.

What Are the Tools You’ll Need?

Your dog’s nails are extremely strong, so you’ll need to invest in powerful, sharp clippers. They’re also curved, which is why special concave trimmers are required. Never attempt to use scissors or blunt trimmers. They may only crack the dog’s nails, which can be painful and open the door for infection.

Many dogs are apprehensive about clipping at first. Let them sniff the clippers until they become comfortable with them. You can also slowly begin to hold and handle your dog’s paws so that they get used to the feeling. Have plenty of treats to reward positive behavior and shower them with praise so that when it comes time to trim, they won’t become stressed.

What Are Some Trimming Tips?

Your dog’s nails contain a series of blood vessels commonly called the “quick.” If you cut their nails too far back, it can rupture these vessels, leading to bleeding, severe pain, and infection. Often, you’ll need to see their veterinarian if this occurs. This is why you should trim in a well-lit room where your dog feels comfortable.

First, you should shave away excess hair around their pads and nails so that you can see properly. Next, comfortably grip their paw. Then, place the clippers around the nail. You should be able to see the light pink stripe further up the nail where the quick is. Once you ensure that your dog is stable, clip the nail. If you’re concerned about nicking the quick, trim only a little bit of the nail at first, as you can always go back and trim again to get the nail shorter.

If you feel uncomfortable trimming your dog’s nails, ask a veterinarian about pet grooming services or for a demonstration at their next wellness exam.
