Many different auto parts need to work together seamlessly for your vehicle to operate. The alternator is an essential but often overlooked part. This component can cause major issues if it starts to fail. A basic understanding of its function can help you identify potential problems and solve them fast.

What an Alternator Does

An alternator is an electrical auto part that’s attached to the engine block. It’s usually made up of an aluminum case and several electrical circuits. It takes the mechanical energy generated by the moving parts of the engine and converts it into electrical energy that powers many of the vehicle’s components, from the lights and AC to the battery.

How It Works

auto partsOnce your car’s engine starts up, the crankshaft initiates a series of movements that powers the alternator. The device has a small rotor inside that spins when the engine is running. This produces electromagnetic energy that then creates an electromagnetic flow to the wiring system. Those wires then connect to the battery so it can charge as the car is in motion. Wires connect to the car’s other electrical components so they can run off the power from the engine.

Signs It’s Failing

If your alternator starts to fail, you’ll probably notice issues with your battery and electrical systems. Your dashboard warning lights may start flashing on and off, or the lights in the vehicle might flicker. If your battery dies after the car has recently been driven and there weren’t any lights left on, that could be another sign of alternator problems. In extreme cases, your vehicle may lose power and not be able to run, so it’s important to bring your car in if you notice signs of electrical issues.
