Your commercial refrigeration system not only keeps perishable food products safe for consumption, but it also helps avoid excessive food waste and preserves flavor to maintain your business’s reputation. Walk-in coolers and freezers that aren’t performing at optimal levels impact food quality and safety while increasing your energy bills.

What Are Some of the Most Common Commercial Refrigeration Issues?

1. Too Cold

Check your thermostat if there’s ice buildup in your refrigerator, and the products within it are frozen instead of chilled. The device may be on the wrong setting. If adjusting the thermostat doesn’t help, the part could be defective and need replacing.

There could also be an issue with the temperature control board that provides the fan motor and compressors with power. A control board providing uninterrupted power will cause refrigerated items to freeze.

2. Not Cold Enough

Clean each system’s evaporator coils as well, as dirty coils create an insulating effect that prevents refrigerant from cooling. Avoid overstocking your units to avoid airflow blockages that create temperature issues. If you aren’t sure what your walk-in cooler and freezer capacities are, refer to your owner’s manuals.

Also, clean the vents blowing cold air into your walk-in cooler and freezer and see if the light comes on when you enter either walk-in appliance. If it doesn’t, there’s a power issue requiring professional attention.

3. Leaks

Ensure your walk-in cooler and walk-in freezer are on even ground. Any tilting will cause the drain pan, which collects excess water, to spill. Other leak causes include degraded water lines, clogged drain lines, and clogged drain pans. Commercial refrigeration technicians know where to look for these components to provide cleaning and part replacement services as needed.
