When you lose a job, it can be difficult to understand your rights under the state's labor laws and figure out how you'll replace lost income. However, the Federal-State Unemployment Insurance Program now provides a safety net. If you are facing a period of joblessness, the information below will help you understand how to get unemployment benefits.

Your Guide to Unemployment Insurance

Who Qualifies?

To be eligible for unemployment benefits under the current labor laws, you must be able to work and actively seeking employment. Also, you must have met certain minimum earnings thresholds. For instance, you must have earned at least $116 per week for at least 18 weeks of the past year. You must also have earned at least $1,688 during one calendar quarter.

You must also be out of work through no fault of your own — either laid off or fired for reasons other than misconduct. If you quit your job, you will not be eligible for benefits.

How Do You Apply?

bankruptcyYou can apply with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. They accept applications by phone, by mail, and online. You can find detailed instructions on their website. You will need to provide contact details, including a phone number and valid email address, as well as your Social Security number and previous employer’s information.

What Else Do You Need to Know?

After receiving your application, the state will send you a Notice of Financial Determination that explains your benefit amount and duration, along with other paperwork. You must continue to file weekly extensions—usually by phone—to assert that you are still out of work and still actively seeking employment to continue receiving benefits.
