When the weather gets colder, the last issue you want is a broken heating system. If the heat does go out, you may need furnace repair, but it could also be something that you can address at home. Before you call for help, try these troubleshooting tips to get your home warm again.

4 Heating System Checks to Run Before Calling for Furnace Repair

1. Inspect the Breaker Box

Your furnace may not work because it tripped its breaker, keeping it from receiving power. Check your breaker box to be sure that the connection powering it is on. Sometimes, when you first fire up the heater, it can draw too much power and flip the switch. If your furnace keeps tripping the breaker, call for furnace repair to find the source of the problem.

2. Check the Thermostat

If none of those options seem to be the problem, cut the power to the thermostat at the breaker box, remove the thermostat housing, and check to see if any of the wires inside are loose or corroded. Dirt and debris can build up and cause your thermostat to fail. If that’s the case, replacing the thermostat could solve your heating issue.

3. Examine the Pilot Light

Another common reason that your furnace stops working is the pilot light going out. Pilot lights can go out for several reasons, from problems within the furnace to strong drafts. If your pilot light fails, it doesn't always mean there's something wrong with the component, and you can reignite it by following the instructions, which are typically on the side of the furnace. However, if the light will not stay lit, call for furnace repair to determine the source of the issue.

4. Replace the Air Filter

Dirty air filters are often the culprit when heating systems don't work reliably. Ideally, you should replace filters every three months to ensure they allow air into the furnace. Many newer furnaces turn off when the filters get too dirty, so if you hear the heat turn on, but it’s not blowing hot air, this could be the issue.
