Backyard play sets are designed to stand up to all types of weather, but the harsh conditions of a cold winter are particularly challenging. Although you can’t do much about the weather, you can take steps to ensure your children’s play set is safe and ready to provide hours of fun when spring returns. Here are a few tips for protecting your at-home playground from whatever winter brings.

3 Tips for Protecting a Play Set From Winter Weather

1. Keep It Sealed with Stain

When temperatures drop, even small droplets of water inside wood framing, ladders, decking, and roofs can freeze, cracking timbers and making the entire structure unsafe. Seal your play set with stain every year or two to block the absorption of moisture and dramatically extend the life of your equipment.

2. Remove Accessories

Extreme cold can make plastic swing seats, ropes, and other detachable accessories brittle, so keep them inside. Before the first snow falls, remove any detachable components, and store them in your basement, attic, or garage.

3. Use a Tarp

A waterproof tarp will prevent snow and ice buildup and also provide added protection against flying debris. If your children don’t use their play set in the winter, cover the entire structure with a tarp, secured with ropes, bungee cords, or heavy-duty clips.
