Microwaves are a modern-day appliance most people can’t live without. These devices can reheat or cook many dishes in minutes, but they must be used properly to ensure the safety of the user. Using it incorrectly can produce an uncooked product or damage the microwave, which may require an appliance repair technician to fix.  Here are a few rules to remember when using the microwave.

Do:

Use microwave-safe containers.

Microwave-safe containers are clearly marked, either with a written label or a symbol of wavy parallel lines or a knife and fork. Plastic containers may not melt, but plastic microbes may leak into the food during cooking. Repeated use of plastic containers also causes them to break down quicker with each use.

Check on your food.

Appliance RepairThe turntable in a microwave provides even cooking. However, denser foods require more help to cook thoroughly. Thicker solid foods should be taken out and turned over, or cut into smaller pieces, while denser liquid foods, like soups, should be stirred occasionally.

Don’t:

Turn on the microwave if it’s empty.

Microwave signals bounce around in the microwave, so if there’s nothing to absorb them, they will burn out the internal tube. This could damage the machine and possibly cause a fire. If a microwave makes a crackling sound while it’s running, contact an appliance repair technician immediately.

Leave spills.

Food particles will burn onto the microwave walls more with each use, which can make it harder to clean. Using sharp or metallic objects to remove caked-on food can damage the microwave’s walls and allow radiation leakage during cooking. Instead, wipe down any spills right away to make the cleaning process easier.
