If you’re pregnant, one of the most important decisions you’ll need to make is what type of birthing plan you want. There are many different methods to choose from, and selecting the right one is crucial to ensure you are relaxed and comfortable. Water births, in particular, offer a host of benefits, and the following guide outlines what you need to know to determine if this method is right for you.

What Is a Water Birth?

A water birth refers to the delivery of a child in a body of water. In most cases, this will occur in a kiddie pool or tub. Midwives recommend this method because many patients find water births to be more relaxing and less painful than traditional birthing options. This is because the warmth helps keep the muscles relaxed and the mother feels less pressure on her joints due to the weightless sensation brought on by being in the water.

Can Anyone Have a Water Birth?

water birthThere are a few situations in which your midwife might advise against a water birth. For example, if the mother has pre-eclampsia, the baby is breech or pre-term, the mother is giving birth to more than one baby, the mother has an infection or an active herpes outbreak, or the labor is induced, it would be safe to give birth in a traditional hospital setting.

How Does a Water Birth Work?

With a water birth, you essentially go through labor and delivery the same way you would in a traditional setting. At any point of your choosing, you can enter the pool. Some women opt to do this in the early stages of labor, whereas others choose to enter the water closer to delivery.

Once you’re in the water, you’ll assume a comfortable position, either sitting on your buttocks with your legs spread, on your back with your head above water, or on all fours. Then, with the help of your doula and midwife, you’ll begin pushing to deliver your baby.
