When creating a new design, you want it to suit your style but also look appealing to your consumers. The golden ratio is a common ratio that you can find in nature, promotional products, and other art platforms. Below are some facts about the golden ratio and how you can utilize it for your design creations and projects.

Understanding the Golden Ratio

The golden ratio is a mathematical ratio that is utilized to create proportional designs that look natural and pleasing to the eye. It is also known as the golden spiral, golden mean, golden section, divine proportion, or the Greek letter Phi. Studied by the Eqyptians, Phi was considered to be a never-ending ratio and was used along with Pi to design the pyramids. While this ratio was once merely a mathematical equation, Greek sculptor and mathematician, Phidias, was the first to apply this ratio to his sculpture designs.

You can find this ratio when you divide something into two parts. The longer part, A, is divided by the smaller part, B. This is equal to the sum of A plus B divided by A, which equals 1.618.

The Importance In Design

promotional productsThe golden ratio is used for sculptures, photography, typography, the layout of a website, and other promotional products. This offers you a design structure that looks natural and is aesthetically pleasing to your audiences or consumers. Our minds find pleasure in designs where all of the elements fit together cohesively. Using this ratio to create your logo, digital print, or blog post, will attract your audience because they will find your product easier to understand visually.

How It’s Implemented in Design

Typography

The golden ratio can help you find out the right font size for your content. For example, if you are figuring out what font size you want for the header of your article, you can use the golden ratio equation to multiply whatever your body text font is with 1.618, and you will get a headline font size that is proportioned correctly.

Website Layout

A variety of websites use a multi-column format for their layout. To find out the correct proportions of those columns, divide your layout pixel size by 1.618, and you will find out the height of your layout.

Logo

For promotional products, like t-shirts and mugs, you’ll want to attach your logo to promote your brand. The golden ratio can help you figure out the right shapes to use to create a proportional logo that is clean and simple, yet appealing to your consumer.
