If you have missing teeth, dentures are a convenient, long-term solution. They’re highly durable, and with proper care, they’ll function the same as your natural teeth. If you’re considering them or have recently gone in for a denture fitting, learn more about what to expect to ensure a smooth transition.

Types of Dentures

Your dentist will offer a wide selection of dentures, depending on your needs. Full dentures replace all your teeth, as prosthetic teeth are fixed to a molded plate that'll sit on top of your gums. Partial dentures function the same way, though the plate only sits in a portion of your mouth between the remaining natural teeth. Custom dentures can be created in either full or partial molds, and they feature updated prosthetic teeth that are more natural-looking.

Implant-supported dentures are a popular alternative to these varieties. In this situation, small titanium rods are fixed into the jaw bone and upper palate at various points, and a denture plate is then secured to them. Snap-in dentures work similarly. However, both of these options require strong bones to hold the implants in place.

Denture Care

denturesYour plates can become breeding grounds for bacteria, so they'll need to be brushed, flossed, and soaked in a cleaning solution each day. You should also always carry them in an approved case, since not doing so could result in warping or other damage that requires a replacement. Finally, you'll need to use dentist-approved cleaning products and see your dentist at least twice a year for a comprehensive exam.

Proper Diet

You may find it challenging to eat when you first get your dentures. Start with simple, soft meals that are easy to chew and won't promote decay, such as applesauce, Jello, yogurt, and mashed vegetables. You can later transition to rice, slow-cooked meats, pasta, ripe fruits, steamed vegetables, and soups. Stay away from sticky sweets and hard foods or ice, as these may damage your dentures.
