Potty training is a challenging task to undertake. For your child, the experience can be overwhelming. For you, the process can be stressful. Since this level of child care is a large milestone for your little one, learning to recognize what mistakes to avoid can make the process easier for you both.

3 Potty Training Mistakes to Avoid

1. Pushing Too Soon

Children who are ready for potty training will take the initiative and head to the bathroom whenever they get the urge. Those who aren’t ready will continue to go in their diaper. Alleviate stress by letting your little one decide when it’s time to begin training, providing regular encouragement throughout the week. Every child is different, and pushing them too soon will only increase frustration.

2. Reverting Back to Diapers

child careConsistency is key when it comes to potty training. It establishes a routine so they can learn how to handle themselves as they get older. Switching back into diapers for the night or while in the car can disrupt their progress. They’ll lose their sense of urgency and discover that they don’t have to rush to the bathroom every time a need arises. Having them wear underwear no matter what is the best way to ensure that the training sticks.

3. Not Praising Good Behavior

It may take some time for your little one to get used to the potty. They may get frustrated or refuse to go at times. When they accomplish the task, however, offer verbal praise for the progress that they’re making. Children develop a sense of accomplishment when they complete a task on their own and providing encouragement could boost their confidence.
