Your water pump plays a serious role in your home’s plumbing. However, freezing temperatures can affect the longevity and function of the pump. Freezing temperatures can cause the casing around the pump to crack. Winterizing your pump is essential regardless of whether you plan to leave your home during the winter. Here is a guide to preparing your water pump for the winter.

4 Steps to Winterizing Your Home

1. Insulate Pipes

wattle-pump-Enterprise-ALIf you plan to stay in your home during the winter months, one affordable way to keep your pump safe is with insulation. Foam insulation sleeves prevent your pipes and pumps from freezing. Foam insulation can be wrapped around your pipes, and the pump should be covered with an insulated enclosure.

2. Cover the Well

Another affordable solution is to cover the well with a fiberglass well house. These well covers can be made using a trash can, or they can be purchased from a professional.

3. Let Faucets Drip

When the temperature begins to dip below freezing, let your faucets drip slightly to prevent your well system and pump from freezing. This is an easy and affordable solution when you know that you’ll be home to turn the water on and off.

4. Winterize Your Water Pump for a Long Period

Shut off the water supply, and make sure that the switch to the pump is powered off. Next, drain the water lines by turning all of the faucets to “on.” Let them continue to run until they are completely dry; this will remove all of the water from your home’s pipes.

The next step is to unplug all of the wiring that powers the pump. This will prevent damage to your pump if someone attempts to use the pump after it’s been winterized.

If you have a deep well, your pump won’t need any further attention. However, shallow wells will need more attention. For shallow pumps, remove the hose clamps that attach the pump lines and feed lines to the water pump. Before removing the clamps, take a photo of the setup so that you can easily attach the system once you come home. Adjust the pump at an angle so that water can drain from the pump prime.
