Quartzite is a sandstone that’s high in crystalline minerals content. It’s made from crushed quartz that’s mixed with resins, bonding components, and pigments. As such they come in many varieties of colors, making them appealing options for homeowners looking to remodel their kitchen countertops. If you own quartz countertops, knowing how to care for them can extend their life span.

How to Maintain Quartz Countertops

1. Save Your Warranty Certificate

A warranty is usually included in the purchase of quartz counters. Typical warranties last 10 to 15 years and can cover manufacture defects and the rare event of breaking. Warranties also include specific instructions from the manufacturers on maintaining your new countertops.

2. Clean & Maintain Regularly

You can use degreasing and disinfectant cleansers to wipe away grease. Avoid using bleach or scouring pads, as they can be abrasive on the surface. Quartz countertops don’t require polishing, and gently cleaning them regularly will maintain their shine. When it comes to tough stains, you can rub them down using a wet rag and an adhesive remover.

3. Use Preventive Measures

Don’t use metal knives and utensils directly onto quartz because they may scratch it. When cutting food, consider using a cutting board. Direct heat can also damage quartz, so use trivets or heating pads to guard your countertops’ surface from hot cookware and pots.

Keep damaging chemicals like trichloroethane, methylene chloride, nail polish remover, bleach, and highly alkaline cleansers away from your countertops. If any of these chemicals reach your countertops, rinse the surface with clean water.
