The holidays can be a difficult time for those in need, making the winter season a perfect time for you and your church family to come up with ways to give back to the community. You might already have charitable holiday traditions that you practice every year, but there’s always room for new ones when it comes to spreading holiday cheer.

How Can You Give Back This Holiday Season?

1. Organize a Food or Clothing Drive

Have your family make room for new toys, clothes, food, and other gifts they will receive during Christmastime by organizing a food or clothing drive. It will feel good to go through your belongings and give your lightly used items to someone who needs them more. Choose a local homeless shelter or another charity to give the items to at the end of the drive.

2. Make Christmas Cards

church Many people throughout the world have to spend Christmas alone or far away from their families. Spread holiday cheer to deployed military, homeless communities, or other groups by making handcrafted holiday cards. This is the perfect activity for the whole family as it teaches children about the meaning of the season and encourages them to express themselves creatively.

3. Raise Money for an Animal Shelter

Don’t forget about your furry friends this holiday season. Organize a church fundraiser for your local homeless shelter. You may also encourage your church family to donate pet food and toys rather than money to support the shelter. Other members of the congregation may also choose to donate their time to caring for the animals.

4. Collect Blankets & Coats

Christmas can be a cold time in more ways than one for the homeless and other people in need. Help people in your community stay warm throughout the winter by donating unwanted blankets and coats. You may even want to organize an event for the congregation to make their own blankets from bulk fleece fabric.
