A heat pump is an efficient and eco-friendly way to heat a home when used correctly. It doesn't work the same way as a furnace or other kinds of HVAC equipment, so learn its quirks if you own one. If you haven't used one before or if you're not sure how to get the most out of the system in cold weather, try these tips to improve its performance.

How Can You Get the Most From Your Heat Pump?

1. Change the Air Filter

Your heat pump draws in air to warm it and distribute it through the house. To improve air quality, there's a filter inside the intake vent. When the filter gets clogged, airflow slows, so the fan kicks into high gear and uses more energy to draw more air through. Hold the filter up to the light; if you can't see any light through it, it's clogged and needs replacement.

2. Use Smart Settings

Heat pumps can be a little slow to warm the home, and cranking them up to high heat won't make it go any faster. All this does is use more energy and drive up utility bills. Instead of maxing out the thermostat, set it at a moderate temperature sooner to give the house time to warm up. If you want, install a programmable thermostat to start getting the house ready before you get home.

3. Keep the Outdoor Unit Clear

Trim back all bushes at least a foot, and clear away leaves, snow, dirt, or other materials from the unit. The heat pump should be installed several inches off the ground to allow air to circulate freely underneath.
