Wrought iron fences are as functional as they are beautiful. In addition to keeping pets in and intruders out, they can give your property a classical aesthetic. What's more, iron looks better as it ages, unlike wood and vinyl, meaning your investment will be worth it. To ensure your fence lasts for decades, follow these simple maintenance steps.

How to Care for Your Wrought Iron Fence

1. Clean the Posts

Dust, dirt, and other debris will inevitably accumulate on your fencing over time. To keep it looking pristine, clean the fence with warm, soapy water at least twice a year. Use a toothbrush for especially stubborn areas, such as small rust spots that have yet to penetrate the posts. Finally, rinse the surface with water and let it air dry.

2. Keep Vines at Bay

fencesYou might like the aesthetic of snaking vines, but if you want to increase the longevity of your fence, it's best to trim them back. Should a vine find its way up the fence, it could scratch off the protective coating and cause rust. To prevent scratching, reapply that protective layer of car wax, water-repelling spray, or rust-inhibiting paint periodically.

3. Replace Hardware as Needed

It's not uncommon for fasteners and gate hardware to wear down faster than the fence itself. Inspect the area every six months for any missing or worn pieces and replace them promptly to ensure the structure maintains its integrity and functionality.
