If you’re moving, downsizing, or are out of space at home, renting a self-storage unit is a convenient solution to the problem. However, with winter coming, there are a few preparations you should make to protect your belongings. Here’s what to do.

How to Prepare Your Self-Storage Unit for Winter

1. Remove Anything That Could Freeze or Break

While a self-storage unit might be temperature controlled, it’s still a good idea to remove any valuable items that could freeze and break. Examples would be anything that has had a liquid in it, such as carpet cleaners or power washers. Electronics are another category of items that can be damaged by winter temperatures. If you don’t want to move these items back into your home, keep them warm by wrapping them in blankets or by making sure that they are completely dry if they had been wet.

2. Bring in Your Outdoor Furniture and Equipment

Self-StorageIf you have outside equipment and furniture to store, now is the time to move it. The last thing you want is to bring in a bunch of snow-covered items that may cause water damage to your other belongings. Instead, go ahead and put all of the outdoor furnishings and equipment into your unit.

3. Move Items Before it Snows

Trying to pack a storage unit in frigid temperatures and deep snow is less than ideal. Not only do you have to work in freezing temperatures, but there is the possibility of bringing snow into the unit. When the snow melts, it may cause water damage to some of the items. If at all possible, try and get everything packed away before the first big snow-fall hits.
