Even if you’re not using your pool in the cold seasons, animals in the area may have other plans. That’s why a cover alone isn’t enough to protect both your pool and the animals. To ensure that your swimming pool remains uncontaminated and the animals are safe, keep in mind the following ways to keep them off.

3 Ways to Ensure Animals Stay Off Your Pool Cover

1. Secure the Cover

Animals can’t get into the water if the cover is tight and secure; however, keeping it firmly down might be trickier than you think. A regular plastic tarp can work if you use clips to attach it to the sides and spread just enough water on the top to keep it weighted without causing it to sink. Getting a cover made of heavier material and grommets around the edges will let you wind a cable through the rings to make it even more secure.

2. Use Repellent

poolMix water with onion, jalapeño peppers, garlic, citrus, and Cayenne pepper, then spray the concoction around the edge of the pool. Most animals will find at least one of those combinations too offensive to be anywhere near. If insects are your main concern, surround the area with lit citronella candles.

3. Install a Fence or a Net

You can keep animals and small children from falling into the water with a fence. You can choose vinyl, mesh, wood, or metal fencing, or you can place a net over the cover to catch birds and other small animals that get through.
