As much as you love your children, it’s understandable if you’d rather have them sleep in their own kids’ beds rather than yours. However, it can be tricky to convince your kids of this. Use the following guide to help them develop a sense of independence.

Why Do Kids Prefer Their Parents’ Bed?

Children like to cuddle in bed with their parents because they feel safest that way. Being alone, especially at night, can also be scary.

Or perhaps your child isn’t completely comfortable in their kids’ bed. If the room is decorated with a bright color scheme, it may be difficult for them to calm down, even in dim lighting. Maybe they simply need help winding down in time to sleep.

How Can You Encourage Your Child to Stay in Their Own Bed?

First, ensure your child feels comfortable in their room. Get a kids’ bed and pillows that are soft enough to be cozy but firm enough to be supportive.

Experiment with night lights if the darkness seems overwhelming. Provide a favorite toy or stuffed animal to keep them company. Consider painting the room in tranquil pastel colors so they can relax easier without even realizing it. If your child is frightened, have a bottle of “monster spray” (also known as water) to apply underneath beds and inside closets.

If your child still comes into your room, consistently walk them back to their bed as many times as necessary while maintaining your calm. You can also implement a rewards system, like a sticker chart leading up to a favorite dinner, to provide positive reinforcement when they do manage to sleep by themselves.
