When you adopt a puppy from a local shelter or humane society, you’ll likely need to schedule vaccinations with a veterinarian. If you’re a new pet owner, you might wonder which shots your canine companion needs. Here is a helpful guide to pet vaccines and when to get them.

4 Essential Puppy Vaccines

1. Rabies

Rabies is a fatal virus that may infect humans and animals. In the state of Hawaii, the law requires you to vaccinate your dogs for rabies at least twice in their lifetimes: once at about 14 weeks and again after one year. Veterinarians recommend getting it every year or two for adult dogs.

2. DHPP

veterinarianAlso known as the distemper shot, DHPP is a combination vaccine that protects against distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, and parvovirus. Your puppy needs the DHPP shot at 14 weeks, 12 months, and every one to two years thereafter.

3. Bordatella

Though vaccinations for bordetella virus, or kennel cough, are not required, veterinarians strongly recommend them. Your puppy should receive this shot at about six to eight weeks to prevent them from contracting an upper respiratory infection and potentially spreading it to other dogs.

4. Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that is especially common in humid climates near slow-moving water. Since it’s possible for dogs to spread the infection to humans, your puppy should get this non-core vaccine at 12 and 16 weeks. Adult dogs at a higher risk of infection should get this shot annually.
