Many high school students hire math tutors to help them prepare for the ACT and SAT exams. Both standardized tests are reviewed as part of the college admissions process, indicating whether a student will thrive when faced with collegiate-level academics. Most universities ask for the scores from the ACT or the SAT, so you can determine which test best highlights your abilities. Below, learn more information about both tests to help decide which to take.

The ACT’s Focus

Avon-Trumbull-Connecticut-Manchester-New-Hampshire-math-tutorDuring the ACT exam, students are expected to recall concepts and principles learned in high school coursework to complete the section. Because the test is a review, less time is given to complete the questions. You’ll have 60 minutes to complete 60 multiple-choice questions, with the option to use a calculator. A math tutor will work to reinforce your knowledge of algebra and geometry formulas, functions, rates and percentages, and other high school-level concepts so you can answer one question in a minute or less

The SAT’s Focus

During the SAT exam, students are given longer to complete the math section, with 80 minutes devoted to complete 58 questions. Although there are fewer questions, students must rely on their critical-thinking skills to answer multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank questions. Students must complete 20 questions in 25 minutes without using calculators. If time limitation invokes anxiety, consider taking the SAT, as you’ll have more time to complete each question. If you struggle with recalling basic information quickly, there is also a reference sheet provided for the math portion of the test. There is also less focus on geometry and more placed on algebra and data analysis. This can work in your favor if you struggle with questions about linear points and dimensions.
