If you’re relocating to a new city or new home and can’t take all of your beds and mattresses with you, you may need to rent a storage unit. However, like most things in life, there’s a right way and a wrong way to store mattresses. Here are some tips you should know.

Long-Term Mattress Storage Tips

1. Don’t Store It in the Basement

Resist the temptation to store a mattress in a friend’s basement. Basements are often damp and musty. Once dampness and odor work themselves into the fibers of your mattress, the damage is done. Basements tend to be full of clutter, too. To keep your mattress safe from rips and tears, consider storing it a storage unit instead.

2. Clean & Air It Out

Before storing your mattress for an extended period, vacuum all sides clean and let it air out. Use an upholstery cleaner to remove stains and freshen the upholstery.

3. Use a Mattress Cover

4. Lay It Flat

Although space may be limited in some storage units, store your mattress flat if possible to keep from damaging it. It won’t bend or buckle if you lay it flat. Standing a mattress on its side is OK only for a short while.

5. Keep It Free

Again, space constraints may be working against you, but avoid placing any boxes, furniture, or other furnishings on top of a mattress while it’s in storage. Piling stuff on a mattress may damage the springs as well as the cushion cover.
