During a routine examination with your gynecologist, you may decide birth control is right for you. In this situation, the physician will review the options available so you can make an informed decision. One popular choice is Nexplanon®. If you’re unfamiliar with this form of birth control, here’s some helpful information to consider.

How Does Nexplanon Work?

Nexplanon is a rod-shaped implant, roughly the size of a matchstick, that a gynecologist places in your arm to avoid pregnancy. Once in place, Nexplanon provides three years of protection. This implant provides a continual release of the hormone etonogestrel. By having this hormone in your bloodstream, eggs will not be released from your ovaries. Additionally, the mucus in your cervix will thicken, making it increasingly more difficult for sperm to reach the egg.

What are the Benefits of This Type of Birth Control?

birth controlOne of the primary benefits of Nexplanon is its effectiveness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this implant is over 99% effective, boasting better results than both copper and hormonal IUDs. Once implanted, you won’t have to worry about taking a daily pill or any upkeep to avoid pregnancy. The implant needs to be removed and replaced every three years.

When you decide to get pregnant, you can schedule an appointment with your gynecologist to remove Nexplanon at any time. Once your implant is gone, regular fertility will return almost immediately.  It’s important to note that this form of birth control does not protect against STDs or HIV.
