Cold temperatures are normal during Alaskan winters. But the bitter cold can be more than a little frustrating when it causes your car locks to freeze and make your doors impossible to open. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to unlock vehicle doors that have frozen over; a few of these suggestions are discussed below.

A Guide to Unfreezing Car Door Locks

1. Use De-Icer

A commercial de-icer will melt the ice around a lock and a frozen door handle. For the lock itself, spray a firm, steady stream of de-icer directly into it; a straw attached to the nozzle can better direct the flow. For the handle, spray the solution under the handle and in the crack between the door and the vehicle body. You can find de-icers at auto suppliers, hardware retailers, and in the automotive section at retail stores.

2. Heat With a Hairdryer

Because the heat generated by the dryer is so intense, it could break the window glass or melt the seal that insulates the door crack. Also, most hairdryers require an electrical cord, so you'll need to be careful and ensure the cord stays dry—away from standing water and out of the path of falling snow or freezing rain. Point the dryer at the lock and move it back and forth over the area to evenly and lightly distribute the supply of heat.

3. Pour Lukewarm Water on the Lock

To unlock vehicles, pour lukewarm water over the entire lock and handle, bearing in mind that a few attempts may be needed to loosen up the ice. Make sure the water isn't hot, as the heat could break the car window glass if the two come into contact. Once the door is open, wipe down the lock and door with a towel so the water doesn't refreeze and cause the same issue.
