Going through menopause can be nerve-wracking for any woman, especially since it can be tricky to know what to expect. Learn more about the condition so you know when to head to a women’s clinic for assistance.

What Is Menopause?

Menopause is the natural cessation of a woman’s menstrual cycle. Contrary to popular belief, it’s a process, not a singular event, that occurs after you’ve had no periods for 12 months. But you may have menopause symptoms for four to five years before then.

Menopause typically starts sometime after the age of 40, though it can also occur early as a result of ovary damage, a hysterectomy, or medical treatments such as chemotherapy.

What Symptoms Should You Expect?

women's clinicThe months leading up to complete menopause are referred to as perimenopause and marked by a long list of symptoms. In addition to experiencing irregular periods, you may have trouble sleeping, losing weight, maintaining a steady mood, or staying a comfortable temperature. Hot flashes and chills are common during menopause, and some women also experience thinning hair, dry skin, night sweats, and changes in breast fullness.

Fortunately, lifestyle changes to improve your overall health will offset symptoms. For instance, getting enough sleep will help with mood changes and memory, so you may want to practice meditation before bedtime. Exercise helps prevent depression and anxiety. In addition to recommended changes, your women’s clinic may prescribe medications to manage symptoms.  Dr. Stephen Swanson and the team of providers at Women’s Clinic of Lincoln are experts in menopause management.  They will be able to discuss all of your options and provide the best treatment plan for you.
