Minimizing remnants is the goal of every fabrication facility, but no matter how long a programmer spends nesting, something can still go wrong. Remnant management software is one way to tag remnants for later use and prevent frequent calls to the metal supplier. Here are a few ideas to help with managing remnants.

How to Make the Most of Your Sheet Metal

1. Understanding the Material Use Rate

Determining the amount of lost materials is the first step to creating fewer remnants. Calculate the amount of material used per sheet and figure in an acceptable loss quotient. Reach the goal by minimizing waste materials. If smaller parts are fabricated in the facility, use remnants cut from holes of some objects, and implement nesting of the trim strip.

2. JIT Nesting

A solid JIT nesting strategy is important in larger facilities requiring fast turnarounds or large outputs. JIT nesting uses a DNC system, but the machine operator doesn’t perform the individual nesting—it’s automatic. This is most effective at the end of a cycle where tail-off begins. The tail-off is minimal since the next nest starts immediately and uses part of the material from the past nest.

Metal Supplier3. Batch Nesting

Before entering batch nesting, contact a metal supplier who can keep up with the ongoing projects. The larger the number of nests created, the fewer remnants are seen. Batch nesting is another way to remove tail-off. Create a large batch of priority parts; once it’s finished, remove nests not run, make the necessary changes to accommodate more nests, and batch nest again.
