Winter is a troubling time of the year for your car’s auto glass. Snow and ice not only hamper visibility but also may damage glass. Windshield repair experts recommend these four care tips for protecting your windshield and auto glass in winter.

How to Care for Auto Glass in Winter

1. Never Use Hot Water

Never pour hot water on auto glass to melt snow and ice. When hot water hits cold glass, it may cause the glass to crack. To avoid expensive windshield replacement, resist the urge to melt snow and ice with hot water.

2. Turn On the Defroster

When firing up your car in winter, turn on the front and rear defrosters if there’s snow or ice on the windows. The heat will warm up the glass gradually and break apart any compacted accumulation.

3. Use an Ice Scraper

Auto GlassAfter the defroster has warmed the windows, brush snow off your car and use an ice scraper to remove icy buildup. Ice scrapers are designed to lift and eliminate ice without damaging glass. Start from the top and work your way down. Thoroughly remove ice to eliminate issues with visibility.

4. Use Winter Windshield-Washer Fluid

When winter weather rolls in, replace the washer fluid in your car with fluid designed to handle cold and icy conditions. Its high methanol content helps to retard the formation of ice and frost.

5. Inspect Glass Condition

Regularly monitor glass for chips or cracks. If you find any damage, schedule auto glass repairs immediately. Imperfections provide recesses for moisture to collect. When the temperature drops, the water will expand as it freezes, worsening the damage.
