Butcher block countertops bring the perfect combination of beauty and functionality to a kitchen. However, just like any hardwood flooring or wooden cabinets, they require a little TLC to preserve that gorgeous aesthetic. The best way to keep yours looking like new is by regularly treating it with mineral oil. Here’s a closer look at how to make your countertops last for a generation.

Why Mineral Oil Is Good for Butcher Block Countertops

Wood requires a balance of keeping unwanted moisture out and trapping the moisture already present inside. Otherwise, warping or a damaged finish may result. The best way to prevent this in your countertop is by adding a layer of mineral oil on top of the wood.

It’s food-safe so you won’t have to worry about contamination, and unlike options like olive, vegetable, or flax oil, it won’t go rancid, so there are no issues with smell.

Mineral oil combined with beeswax is even better. The oil penetrates the pores in the wood to keep it conditioned, and the water-resistant trait of the beeswax helps to rejuvenate the wood and prevent any moisture from getting through this new barrier.

How to Maintain Your Butcher Block Countertops

Butcher Block CountertopTreat the countertop with food-safe mineral oil and beeswax at least once a month. To do this, pour a liberal amount onto the wood, spread it over the entire surface, and let it soak in as much as possible. You’ll know it’s become saturated when it won’t absorb any more oil.

Once the entire countertop has been covered in the mineral oil, let it sit. It’s recommended to wait overnight since this gives the wood more time to become fully saturated. At the very least, however, wait 15 minutes. Once that time has elapsed, wipe away any excess oil.

For even more protection, apply butcher block conditioner afterward, as this helps to lock in the mineral oil for longer.
