Going to a happy hour at a bar or restaurant is an ideal way to get to know your fellow employees away from the stress of the workplace. However, you don’t want to damage your work reputation with poor etiquette. Follow these do’s and don’ts to make a good impression when you’re drinking with coworkers.

Do:

Eat beforehand.

Drinking on an empty stomach isn’t wise if you’re trying to practice moderation. However, if you start your happy hour off with a snack, the food will counteract the effects of the alcohol, preventing you from getting too intoxicated and avoiding a headache the next morning. Consider getting to the restaurant a little early and ordering appetizers to help everyone drink responsibly.

Enjoy yourself.

restaurantThis is supposed to be a fun time with your coworkers, so relax and enjoy yourself. Take the time to form real friendships. Keep the conversations positive with your officemates and see if you have any common interests outside of work. You’ll notice a different atmosphere when your team returns on Monday morning.

Don’t:

Overdo it.

When you’re at a happy hour with coworkers, make sure not to drink too much. Even if the management personnel aren’t present, you should still  drink like the boss is watching to avoid any harm to your professional reputation.

Talk shop.

While you may be used to talking about the job with your coworkers, don’t stick with these old patterns. Make the most of your social time by branching out and getting to know your teammates on a deeper level.
