If you’re missing teeth, but you don't want to deal with removable dentures or bridges, dental implants may be the answer. Comprised of a titanium post that serves as the root for a porcelain or ceramic crown, dental implants can restore your smile permanently. If you’re considering putting one in, here’s what you need to know.

What Are the Different Kinds of Dental Implants?

Dental implants are categorized by the ways in which they bind to the jawbone. For example, endosteal implants are essentially metal posts that are inserted directly into the jawbone. Once osseointegration has occurred, and the gums have healed, a second post that can support the actual crown is attached to the original implant.

dental implantsSubperiosteal implants, on the other hand, are essentially metal frames that are inserted directly on top of the jawbone, just beneath the gum tissue. As the surrounding tissue heals, the frame adheres to the jawbone. Posts are then attached to the frame and topped with crowns.

How Do You Care for Dental Implants?

Your dentist will provide detailed instructions on caring for your mouth following the implantation procedure. For example, you’ll inevitably have to bite down on gauze for the first hour after surgery. Additionally, your dentist may instruct you to eat only soft foods for the first 24 hours. You’ll also have to avoid drinking out of a straw so you don't dislodge any clots.

Once your gums heal, and the implant is topped with a crown, the artificial tooth won't require any special care. You’ll simply be instructed to brush and floss normally. An exception applies to all-on-four dental implants, though. These posts are inserted to support full dentures. Naturally, they will have to be removed, brushed, and soaked every night. The actual implants, however, won't require any additional care beyond keeping your gums clean and healthy.
