Cleaning your garage floor during the winter isn’t just for aesthetic purposes. It also creates a safe, dry environment that greatly reduces the risk of injury. However, with the amount of in-and-out traffic, this task can seem nearly impossible to perform. Make it easier on yourself by considering the following tips for keeping a garage clean.

4 Tips for Cleaning the Garage Floor This Winter

1. Remove Snow

garage floorParking your vehicle outdoors causes snow and ice to accumulate along the surface. Since this can happen during an afternoon errand run, make sure to brush off the vehicle before bringing it inside the garage. This will reduce the amount of water that drips on to the floor and keep the area clean.

2. Wipe Down With Vinegar

Snowmelt products are known for containing harsh chemicals. Allowing these to sit on the surface of your garage floor could cause the material to deteriorate. Clean the surface by combining one gallon of hot water and one cup of vinegar in a bucket. Use a stiff broom or a deck brush to spread the solution over the surface. Remove any excess water with a squeegee.

3. Turn On the Fans

If there’s still any residual moisture on the floor, then it’s time to bring out the fans. Moving air will cause the water to evaporate and prevent it from soaking into the material. Position one or two at the back of the garage and leave them running until the floor is completely dry.

4. Install a Floor Containment Mat

Floor containment mats are made of a thin, durable material that acts as a barrier against the elements. They fit snugly up against the garage floor and capture any water and loose debris that may fall from the vehicle. After the season is over, all you have to do is roll it up, shake it off outdoors, and put it away until next winter.
