Trees become sick from infestations, disease, and adverse weather conditions. When trees are ill, they can uproot and fall, damaging property or hurting people nearby. Fortunately, a tree removal company can take it away before it becomes hazardous. Here are a few factors that indicate a need for this service.

3 Red Flags Your Tree Is Sick

1. Wilted Twigs & Leaves

The black twig borer can be found in Hawaii, and the females are known to burrow into twigs and spread fungal spores. The spores restrict water flow to the leaves, and an infestation is apparent when the stem loses coloration. Twigs become wilted within weeks of infestation. If these bugs are left to thrive, their spores will restrict all the water supply veins in the tree and kill it. If multiple females are located in the same area, a small canker may appear. Susceptible trees include coffee, kukui, mahogany, and pikake.

2. Falling Bark

tree removalBark periodically falls off; however, it grows back over time. If there are bald patches where the bark doesn’t grow back, there’s something wrong with the tree. The bark protects the wood, and without it, the tree is susceptible to insects. Insects will burrow into the tree or under the bark and diminish its water supply, eventually killing it.

3. Fungal Growth

Fungi destroy the living tissue or central core of a tree. Decay isn’t always visible unless there’s damage to the tree; however, most fallen limbs have signs of deterioration. Fungal diseases destroy conductive tissue, decreasing the wood weight of limbs and trees. A 10% decrease in wood weight reduces the wood strength by 70 to 90%, and a weak branch may suddenly fall off. Although fungi can harm most species of trees, elder trees are the most susceptible.
