Although drapes can add visual interest and texture to interiors, many homeowners don’t understand the care required to keep the window treatments in pristine condition. Worn, dusty fabric can make an entire room look dingy, which is why you should dry clean, dust, hand-wash, or machine-wash drapery according to the instructions on the label. To ensure each task is performed correctly, pay attention to the following tips.

How to Clean Drapes Properly

1. Keep Water Away From Embroidered Embellishments

The type of ornamentation on the drapes will help determine whether they can withstand a tumble in the washing machine. The water could warp pleats and other embroidered embellishments or shrink seams and linings. It’s best to take these window coverings to a dry cleaner.

2. Use a Light Touch on Delicate Fabrics

Kalaheo-Hawaii-drapesDust can cling to the tufted fabric of velvet drapes, making them look discolored in some areas. Soaking in water can stain and flatten the pile, so dust the fabric to restore its rich appearance. You can use a damp chamois cloth to lightly go over the surface.

If you have airy silk window coverings, the fabric could snag on the agitator fin in the washing machine. To prevent damage, hand-wash with a mild detergent. Use lukewarm or cold water to avoid shrinking.

3. Use the Gentle Cycle

Although you can put cotton drapes in the washing machine, make sure to use the gentle cycle or delicate setting with lukewarm water and mild detergent. Exposure to ultraviolet rays from sunlight slowly breaks down the fibers. Using the regular or permanent press cycle could further strain the material. After washing, put the drapes on a clothesline to dry, as tumbling in the dryer could fray the material.
