Getting regular massages can help reduce stress, decrease muscle tension, relieve pain, and improve your overall wellness. However, if you’ve never received a professional massage before, you may be nervous and unsure of what to expect at your first appointment. Below are the do’s and don’ts for a first massage.

Do:

Reschedule if you’re sick.

If you’re not feeling well on the day of your appointment, it’s best to stay home. If you arrive sick to your appointment, you can spread the illness to your massage therapist and other clients. You also won’t be able to experience the massage properly, as you might feel too ill to enjoy it. Call your massage therapist and reschedule your appointment for another day.

Communicate your needs.

massagesWhen you receive a massage, don’t be afraid to speak up. If you feel pain, let your massage therapist know immediately. If you don’t feel enough pressure, voice your thoughts. If you have areas that are particularly high in tension, ask your therapist to address those muscles. Your therapist wants you to have the best experience possible and won’t take anything you say personally.

Don’t:

Arrive late.

Keep in mind that your massage therapist likely has several appointments after yours. If you arrive late for your massage, other clients may have to wait longer. By arriving 10 minutes early, you will have time to fill out paperwork and talk about your preferences with your therapist.

Leave your cellphone on.

A massage should be relaxing and free of distractions. If someone calls or texts you during your session, it could have a negative impact on your experience. A cellphone can also disrupt other patients at the massage clinic. You can avoid all of this by simply turning your cellphone off before your appointment.
