Influenza is a common viral infection that can be extremely serious, and even fatal, among certain high-risk groups.  Although seniors over the age of 65 are considered one of these groups, there are ways for older adults—and those who care for them in assisted living facilities and nursing homes—to prevent the flu.  Learn more about a few crucial precautions to ensure you or your loved one stays safe.

Why Is Prevention Important?

Older individuals have naturally weaker immune systems, which means their bodies aren't as well-equipped to fend off infections and illnesses. Given this diminished protection, a virus like the flu can quickly develop into something much more serious such as pneumonia. This infection inflames the lungs and can lead to a lengthy hospital or nursing home stay.

How Do You Prevent the Flu?

The flu shot is considered the single best way for seniors to prevent the flu. Though age-related physiological changes can sometimes make the vaccine less effective, it's still the standard preventative measure for older adults.  In fact, experts recommend a higher-dose flu vaccine designed especially for seniors.

Older people should also be sure to practice good hygiene when it comes to health and home.  Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, wipe surfaces with antibacterial disinfectant, minimize or avoid contact with flu-infected persons, and always cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing (and then wash your hands).

If you're a caregiver, you can benefit from these safeguards as well. When looking after a flu-infected senior, wear a surgical mask that covers the mouth and nose.  If it's not possible to wash your hands often, keep a bottle of antibacterial hand sanitizer with you at all times, and apply it throughout the workday using good sanitizing technique.
