Corrosion is a natural process that occurs when a metal is exposed to moisture, other elements, or certain environmental factors. All metals can corrode to some extent, though some, like stainless steel, will corrode slower because of their composition. Below are three ways to help you protect your metal from corrosion.

3 Ways to Stop Metal From Corroding

1. Limit Water Exposure

Be mindful of the environment surrounding the metal, especially the water sources with which it may come into contact. Water is one of the most significant contributors to corrosion, so keep the metal out of the path of rain, waterlines, and lake or river water. If the metal object holds water, be sure the water is treated with the right chemicals to minimize hardness and alkalinity.

2. Utilize a Protective Coating

steel Cincinnati, OHThere are two types of protective coatings for metal. Paint coatings shield the metal from the chemical processes that result from environmental exposure. Sacrificial coatings encompass the material with another kind of metal that is more prone to oxidation. This results in the outermost layer absorbing the majority of the corrosive influence and leaving the bulk of the metal underneath untouched. Sacrificial coating types include cathodic protection, such as coating iron alloy steel with zinc, and anodic protection, which covers iron alloy steel with a less-active metal.

3. Use a Corrosion-Resistant Metal

In some cases, you may be able to use a metal that has higher corrosion resistance. Stainless steel and aluminum are both popular choices. While much depends on environmental influences, some metals tend to corrode very quickly and may not be the best choice for every application, such as pure iron.
