Face-to-face interactions are an essential part of a real estate career. You never know who you’ll meet, and since a lot of your time is spent in empty properties, it’s important to stay safe. Being mindful of best practices will prevent incidents with criminals posing as customers and other issues.

How to Stay Safe as a Real Estate Agent

1. Watch What You Wear

Dressing to impress is a must for successful real estate agents, but safety should be a watchword, too. Be sure you aren’t making yourself a target. Large jewelry, designer handbags, and expensive accessories may appeal to criminals.

Since many agents work alone in the field, this can be especially dangerous. Dress minimally while still attaining your desired professional look. It’s wise to leave expensive items out of any on-site photos you use for advertising your business as well.

2. Schedule First Meetings at the Office

As an alternative, meet in a busy public place, such as a coffee shop, where you can safely screen new clients.

3. Let Someone Know Where You Are

Share upcoming appointments with a spouse or friend. Let them know where you’ll be, what time you’ll arrive, and how long you expect to be there. It’s safe to also share the client’s name. Call when you’ve finished so they know you’re safe and moving on to another client.
