Hanging out with friends at your local bar and enjoying tasty pupus is fun, especially if there’s live music playing. Although upbeat tunes can get you excited, be respectful so that you don’t interrupt other listeners. Here are a few etiquette tips to follow the next time you’re enjoying live music.

Do:

Clap politely.

Musical artists love to hear appreciation from the audience, and if you’re listening in a smaller venue, keep the clapping at a minimum. Since loud clapping will drown out the restaurant area, lightly tap your hands together to show appreciation for a job well done. Additionally, it’s challenging for the band to continue their set if they have to wait for the clapping to stop.

Tip if they play a song you requested.

It’s fun to ask for a request and see the musicians figure out how to play it right in front of you. This is a talent that takes years of experience. If they play your request, tip them for their skill and enthusiasm.

Don’t:

Holler.

live musicAvoid shouting or hollering to show your appreciation for the band’s music. Being loud during the performance distracts the musicians and drowns out the music to those around you, so remain courteous and let others enjoy the live music, too.

Ignore them.

Let the band know you’re listening. It doesn’t matter where in the venue you are, a little dancing or foot-tapping can go a long way toward appreciation. Look at them occasionally, and maybe raise a glass to their talent. Let them know they’ve won your approval.
