3 Reasons for Puffy Eyelids, Whitefish, Montana

Waking up in the morning with a swollen, puffy eyelid isn’t just uncomfortable. If you don’t know what caused it, it can also be concerning. Understanding some of the common reasons this occurs will help you take the necessary eye care steps to rectify the issue.

3 Reasons Your Eyelids Are Swollen

1. Stye

If your eyelid starts off looking red and swollen but then starts looking like a pimple a little later, you’re likely dealing with a stye. This occurs when the glands in the eyelid become infected as a result of excess oil or dirt. Typically, this problem goes away on its own after a few days. While you’re waiting for it to get better, avoid using any products on your lids, and use a warm compress to decrease discomfort.

2. Allergies

This may occur during early spring or late fall when people are exposed to excessive levels of pollen or hay. Or, it may occur if you’re allergic to dust, fur, or any other type of substance that came in contact with the eye. In most cases, taking over-the-counter antihistamines should decrease the swelling. You can also utilize an ice pack.

3. Exhaustion

After a long, grueling week, it isn’t uncommon to wake up with swollen eyelids. This occurs when the body produces too much cortisol, leading to water retention. The best eye care methods to relieve this issue are using a cold compress on your lids, drinking lots of water to flush out your system, and getting as much rest as possible. You can also use an eye cream before bed to decrease the chances of waking up with puffy lids.
